Couldn't find a thread for 1/144 scale gunpla, so decided to start one. And its for this mini-review of the HG 1/144 Unicorn Gundam (D-mode) ANA version kit.

HG 1/144 Unicorn Gundam (D-mode)
ANA version

Got this kit MIB off YJA earlier this year and was surprised at how much it cost. Here's what the box looks like:

This kit is a mix of chrome sprues (gun metal and metallic blue sprues), pearly white sprues (the white colour sprues actually have extra finish that makes it look like pearl) and clear sprues (the clear blue sprue for the psycho-frame):

Here's a close-up of the beautiful clear blue sprue, the special ANA stickers and the instruction sheet for the application of the stickers:

Work in progress pic showing the beautiful clear blue psycho-frame that mostly goes underneath the armour:

Completed Unicorn Gundam before the stickers are applied:

The special sticker sheet and instructions:

After the stickers have been applied:

Overall, the asymmetric design of the stickers work really well. The blue colour ANA logo also matches really well with the clear blue psycho-frame. However, for the left shoulder, the stickers are a bit smaller than the armour they go on, resulting in the edges of the armour not being covered by the sticker design. This is a minor issue and not readily apparent.

The other thing about this kit is that as a HG, it actually has quite a large number of parts. This is due to the psycho-frame that goes underneath the armour, and resulted in the assembly process being comparable to a simple MG kit. Nonetheless, the build process was straight forward, and the end result was very satisfying. Also, the gun fits in the hand quite well and doesn't droop.

However, I was disappointed that this kit does not come with beam sabers (the handles are on the wrists and the back-pack, but there are no beams provided). All Gundam kits should come with the beams for the saber, and blue beams would have been beautiful. Nonetheless, it is still a beautiful kit and if there is ever an MG version, I will definitely get it.

I love these colors. I have seen the normal Unicorn Gundam in the game, this blue works much better than the red. The chrome is a bonus. Thanks for this Spartan.

Pics of the new HGUC 1/144 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee is out. This kit will be released in Jan 2012:

http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=36589

This Unit 02 of the RX-0 is supposed to be designed with a lion motif (as compared to the unicorn motif of Unit 01). Can't wait to see what the MG version will look like.

A unicorn, lion, and a banshee? Is Gundam getting into chimeras now? It still looks cool i guess

Which one? ANA Unicorn or Unicorn Banshee? Personly I much prefer the ANA Unicorn to all other Unicorn variants so far, although this new Unicorn is interesting to say the least. Is there a new anime for Gundam coming up soon? What other reason would there be for a new kit?

Gundam UC (Unicorn Chronicles) is currently running. The 4th episode should be out soon, if it hasn't been aired yet. Gundam UC is a 6 episode series, with 1 episode being released a year. Each episode is more of a mini-movie since it is 1 hour long. And Unicorn Banshee makes its appearance at the end of the 4th episode.

Check out the winners from around the world for the recent Gunpla Builders World Cup:

That last pic showing a Zaku stepping on a tank and firing on another 1 is probably a 1/144 scale diorama. And it is built by an 8-year old girl from Hokkaido, Japan!

Its safe to say that this 8 year old doesnt have much going for her in the social department, but who cares! That is some serious talent!

Gunplaism is the only way I can describe this.

Usually the shogakkou kids who win prizes in these types of things are the ones whose parents did all the hard work for them. I've seen so many science projects winning prizes that were undeniably done by the kids dad. It's not really fair on the others, but in Japan the people judging don't often seem to take that into consideration.

I also saw a native english speaking JHS student win an english recitation contest...

Now that just isnt right. Although the JHS thing is just funny. How does something like that go unnoticed.

My bro just got some Gundam from the Unicorn series, black in color but I cant think of the name. And now that I have the gray and new black thin gundam marker, I can enjoy redetailing all of our kits!! =(

Finished HG Delta Plus recently. A shame that the the 2nd sword blade has no purpose...

Anyway, not to get off topic, but anyone here a member of any good Gundam forums?

While it's not a Gundam forums, I hang out at Hobby Fanatics. It's not super active, but we're pretty friendly as long as you don't spam the place to get into the trading section. x.x

There's also Gundam Eclipse, but I rarely go there. (I've been meaning to change this.)

As for the topic, most of my kits are 1/144. :3

HGUC 1/144 RGM-96X Jesta
Tri-Star Clear Version

Got down to building this HGUC kit that I got some time earlier this year. Really liked the design of this RGM, which makes it look like a significantly upgraded GM:

Most of the sprues from this kit are clear, and here's a look at one of these sprues:

HGUC kits are designed to be easy to assemble, and it doesn't take very long to assemble the chest of the Jesta:

The colours are really nice, but it is difficult to capture the real beauty of the clear plastic in photos.

Here's what the chest looks like with backpack:

Note that the "collar" at the top of the chest is actually clear purple.

Here's a look at the chest with backpack, head, shoulders, 1 assembled upper arm and a partially assembled upper arm:

This is what the upper body looks like after it all comes together:

A close up look at the head of the Jesta:

I really like the design of the head. And this clear version of the head looks really nice!

A different perspective to show the comms antenna on the left side of the head:

View of the legs and waist:

Getting the 2 halves of the legs together was harder than I expected it to be as all the pegs needed to be aligned just right. But, it is gratifying when it all fits.

The completed Jesta without any weapons:

Fully armed, but without stickers yet (HGUC kits don't come with decals):

The fully completed kit (stickered according to instructions):

This is an interesting design feature of the Jesta:

The shield is not actually attached to the left arm of the MS, but to the backpack. This leaves the shield free to protect the MS, independent of the movement of the left arm. However, it also means that the range of the movement of the shield will not be the same as one mounted on the left arm. Would love to see how that comes out in a MG kit.

Overall, simple as it is, I really like this kit. Its colours are great and there are some nifty design features. Would love to see how a MG version turns out.

Cool kit Spartan!

How did you get the kit, as this one seems to be a limited release?

Thanks!

It is indeed a limited release kit and I was lucky to get it from The Falcon Hangar, a local hobby store.

HGUC 1/144 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee
Theatre Limited Edition (Clear)

This is my 3rd HGUC kit review, and may well be the last one for quite a while.

This clear version of the Banshee is said to be a limited release that was available only during the initial screening of 1 of the episodes of Unicorn Chronicles in Japan. I was able to get this kit from YJA and this is what the box looks like:

There are not a lot of info on this kit in English, so I hope this review will be useful.

Here's a look at the sprues of this kit:

Here's a close-up view of the beautiful clear orange sprue that makes up the pyscho frame of the Banshee:

The metallic looking bits in it add to the beauty of the sprue.

The 1st component to be assembled is actually the chest of the Banshee. This pic shows a partially assembled chest where the psycho is not yet covered by armour:

This pic shows 2 partially assembled shoulders:

The colour scheme of gold, orange, clear orange and clear blue is really nice.

Here's what the chest with shoulders look like. Some of the armour in front of the chest is not yet assembled to give a better view of the psycho frame beneath:

The backpack is next, and this pic shows the backpack next to the chest, before it is fitted on:

Next up is the head. This pic shows a partially assembled head:

Note that the eyes is actually a sticker sheet.

The completed Banshee head:

The horns that are in clear orange look really beautiful, and its hard to capture that beauty in a photo.

These are the shoulder armour for the Banshee. 1 is fully assembled with all armour bits, the other is partially assembled to show the psycho frame beneath the armour bits:

These are the weapons unqiue to the Banshee:

The Banshee is supposedly designed for combat in an atmosphere (Unicorn is designed for use in space) and as a result, it comes with a different set of weapons (added in by the anime). The long weapon on the left is a ranged, energy weapon, whilst the claws on the right are for close range combat.

And this is what the Banshee looks like with the head, chest, shoulders, arms and weapons assembled:

Next up is the feet:

Note that the bottom of the feet is actually clear purple, while the clear blue parts are above the clear purple, but below the clear orange parts.

These are the bits making up the leg of the Banshee:

I hope the gold plastic does not deteriorate over time.

The 2 legs of the Banshee:

Being a HGUC kit, the amount of flexibility in the kit is not comparable to RG, MG or PG.

These are the leftover bits:

The Banshee assembly instruction does not actually include the assembly of these bits. Hence, I referred to the Unicorn assembly instruction to make these.

This is the final product, RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee:

Back view:

Close up view of the head to show the beautiful design:

Close up view of the legs:

Note that the bright yellow bits on the centre line of the legs are actually stickers.

Back view with the shield attached to the backpack:

Whilst Banshee is not supposed to use a shield, the shield can actually be attached to the backpack. Similarly, the beam rifle can also be attached in the same position (replacing the shield).

However, it is worth noting that in destroy mode, the Banshee's right hand is covered by the long range beam weapon and hence it cannot hold the beam rifle.

Overall, I must say that this is a really beautiful kit. It's a pity that the production run is very small and this kit is quite highly sought after on YJA.
